Congratulations to Prof Panicos Kyriacou who has been awarded the Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies Group (MITG) Surgical Innovations Research Challenge for a project entitled Development of a novel intra-luminal sensor for monitoring intestinal viability in colorectal/bowel cancer.

Medtronic is one of the largest medical devices companies in the world, and the Medtronic Research Challenge aims to bridge the gap between promising research and commercialization by supporting proof of concept projects at Universities and start-ups in areas of strategic interest.

We are really happy to announce that Prof Panicos Kyriacou has been awarded the very competitive Samsung Global Research Outreach (GRO) programme award which consists of $150,000 for one year. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project.

Congratulations to Ms Zaibaa Patel for her accepted publication The effects of optical sensor-tissue separation in endocavitary photoplethysmography, on Physiological Measurement.

- Congratulations Dr Constantino Carlos Reyes-Aldasoro, Mr Cefa Karabag and José Alonso Solís-Lemus for their three publications presented at the 22nd Medical Image Understanding anc Analysis (MIUA) conference, July 2018.
- Congratulations to Dr Reyes-Aldasoro and Mr Solis-Lemus for their accepted publication presented in the IEEE Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI), April 2018.
- Congratulations to Mr Nathan Olliverre and Dr Reyes-Aldasoro for their accepted publication in the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), September 2018.

Grants and awards

  • We  are all delighted to learn that Mr Mario Bejarano completed successfully his PhD viva voce in October,2018!
  • Congratulations to Dr Constantino Carlos Reyes-Aldasoro for winning the third place in the world-wide MATLAB Online Live Editor Challenge in the category for staff. See the winners in all categories here, and Dr Reyes-Aldasoro's latest public code in his Github page.

  • Congratulations to Dr Constantino Carlos Reyes-Aldasoro who has been awarded two grants, one by the Leverhulme Trust in collaboration with the School of Health and Psychological Sciences at City, with the title Measuring asymmetry in the articulation of English speech Sounds and it is for duration of 3 years (total funded value of £235k). The second is in collaboration with Monash University in Australia and funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC). The  total grant value is $390k where City is the Co-I Institution. The title of the grant is Nuclear plasticity during neutrophil migration and function, the project duration is for 3 years commencing in 2017.
  • Congratulations to Dr. Justin Phillips who has been awarded a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Product Development Award to develop a non-invasive intracranial pressure (nICP) monitor. The total value of the award is over £500,000 for a three year project. The project team comprises Dr. Justin Phillips, Prof. Panayiotis Kyriacou and Mr Christopher Uff, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Head of Neurotrauma at The Royal London Hospital.   • Congratulations to Ms. Haneen Njoum on getting this year's NSF young professional award, following her presentation at the EMBC 16.
  • We  are all delighted to learn that Mr. Karthik Budidha completed successfully his PhD viva voce on the 4th of July, 2016. We hope he will continue with positive results on his upcoming research with the same quality and rigour he has always shown. Congratulations, Karthik!
  • Congratulations to Miss Zaibaa Patel whose research project has been approved and awarded by the Livery of The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers!
  • Dr Iasonas Triantis has recently been successful in his EPSRC first grant application.
  • Dr Justin Phillips has received a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Leverhulme Fellowship.
  • City, University of London’s Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering, led by principal investigator Professor Panicos Kyriacou, has secured funding from the National Institute of Health Research’s (NIHR) Invention for Innovation (i4i) scheme for two projects totalling £1,554,894.
  • Professor Panos Liatsis was awarded an FP7 research project totalling 1.1 million euro under the 'Research for the benefit of SMEs' scheme to develop an integrated sensor system using ground penetrating radar, infrared thermography and air-coupled ultrasound for inspection of road surfaces and bridge decks. City is the coordinator of FP7 RPBHealTec, involving four SMEs, three RTDs and two end-user organisations.
  • Dr Constantino Carlos Reyes-Aldasoro is an Associate Investigator in an Australian Research Grant (A$542k) led by Professor Graham Lieschke and funded by the Australian NHMRC.
  • Dr Michelle Hickey and Professor Panicos Kyriacou have won the 2013 Excellence Award (£50,000) as joint winners of the 6th annual City, University of London Research Competition. The pair submitted a proposal entitled: Personal Lithium Blood Level Analyser for Bipolar Disorder Patients.

  • Congratulations to Prof. Panicos Kyriacou who has been shortlisted, following the recommendation of the Judging Panel, for a Vice-Chancellor’s Award in the category of Research Project of the Year. The Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 16th June at 2.30pm in The Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre.
  • Prof Kyriacou has been appointed as member of the editorial team of the journal Sensors (Released Impact Factor of Sensors (2014): 2.245). Prof Kyriacou also contributes to this journal as a Special Issue Editor in Optical Sensors in Medicine, and Topical Collection Editor in Sensors for Globalized Healthy Living and Wellbeing.
  • City, University of London’s Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering has been selected to organise the prestigious Innovations and Applications of Monitoring Perfusion, Oxygenation and Ventilation (IAMPOV) International symposium in 2020.
  • Professor Panicos Kyriacou has been elected president-elect of the European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES).
  • Dr Constantino Carlos Reyes-Aldasoro was elevated to the prestigious grade of Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
  • Professor Panos Liatsis was elected to the rank of Senior Member of the IEEE.

  • Professor Panos Liatsis was the Conference Chair of the 2015 International Conference on Systems, Signals and Image Processing (IWSSIP 2015), which was held in London in September 2015. IWSSIP 2015 attracted over 120 participants from 38 countries and was sponsored by the IEEE and EURASIP.
