Human-Computer Interaction Design

MSc in Human-Computer Interaction Design

The MSc in Human Computer Interaction Design, formerly known as MSc Human-Centred Systems, is taught by staff in City’s Centre for HCI Design. It is for people who want to design technology that meets user needs, creating interactive systems that are useful, easy-to-use and engaging. The course equips students with the latest research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with which to design, implement and evaluate interactive systems and technologies, including systems on the Web, mobile and beyond.

This course will help you to:

  • Understand the latest academic research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), usability and Interaction Design.
  • Think about design in new ways - recognising that there are many 'right' ways to design interactive systems.
  • Gain a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, along with the necessary skills and experience to create engaging user experiences.
  • Study modules that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process - from understanding user needs, to designing interactive systems that meet those needs, to evaluating the usability of those (and existing systems) through user research.

The course offers excellent employability prospects, providing students with the HCI knowledge, skills and values to become future UX leaders – as usability and accessibility specialists, UX consultant, interaction designers and information architects. The course is also excellent preparation for doctoral (PhD) study. The course also incorporates an optional internship route, where students have gained real-world experience at a variety of organisations including Fluent Interaction, The Guardian and Tesco.

What our academics love most about teaching on the MSc HCID:

Dr Alex Taylor (Course Director)

I'm continually inspired by our students, with their zeal for learning and their eagerness to ask challenging questions about the digital technologies that now pervade daily life.

Dr Stephann Makri

I love teaching such an enthusiastic and close-knit community of students, who are united by an ethos of wanting to improve peoples' lives through design.

Prof Stephanie Wilson

I love that the MSc HCID attracts such a diverse range of students, in terms of age, nationality and experience, and that each cohort engages so enthusiastically with the course and the learning challenges we set.

Dr Simone Stumpf

I love guiding students to achieve their potential — and stretch them just a little bit more. I believe that we are shaping future leaders in UX and HCI, whether in academia or industry. Our students have the ability to go very far, founded on the knowledge and skills provided by the MSc HCID.
